Good Children’s Books Help Make Sure Your Kids Read Well
For several years I have lived in a third world country where a third of the children do not attend school at all. For some, their parents can’t afford the required uniforms and notebooks (the public schools usually don’t have textbooks). For others, the parents are not concerned enough to wake the children up in the mornings and get them off to school. Some are not allowed to go because the parents want them at home to watch the house, take care of the younger siblings, or work on the streets.
Can you imagine living like that? What if it were your child who was denied an education? Well, it’s not your child, so make sure yours gets the best education possible. Keep on top of their progress, especially in the subject of reading. Make sure they are learning phonics. Make sure they have plenty of good children’s books to keep them challenged and practiced in reading. Listen to them read and help them sound out the new words. Help and encourage them in any way you can to make sure they become good readers. Don’t let them become part of the sad statistics of those who can’t read.
